Is my son sleeping ok and is this normal?

Its fine. My daughter refused to sleep in a crib at night though she slept in one at daycare, until about 3 &1/2 months-she slept in a rock and play which is very similar to the Maclaren I think. Now at 5 months she sleeps in the crib all night no problems. I wouldn't sweat it-so what gets you a good night's sleep and keeps him comfortable.
