DSLR video and XLR adapter help?

I recently had an XLR to 3.5mm adapter stolen, so I ordered a new one off of B&H. I bought a Neutrik female XLR to 3.5mm adapter, and today I attached it to my camera and microphone. When I tested the audio, my Canon 60D was not recorded audio through the microphone but from its integrated mic. Did I do something wrong? Is it the wrong type of cable? It's just a normal female XLR on one end, and on the other end there is a 3.5mm with 3 black bands.
