TRS vs XLR balanced connectors?

My DBX compressor has balanced ins/outs that I extend to a balanced TRS patchbay. The DBX unit has both XLR and TRS conns for in and out. Is there any benefit to utilizing one over the other in this setup / what is the difference? Is it not balanced=balanced, 2 signals and a shield either way you go?
