When i try and open an .xlr document i get weird signs?

I only get a bunch of squares instead of words. it works fine on the laptop. but we don't have a wireless printer. My mom blames me for it but i do nothing. anyway im tired of her complaining so how do i convert xlr documents to a readable format.
